I can hardly belive that India has such a social standing like that before. I never thought it's that difficult to live in that place. The book boreded my mind most of the time and I couldn't stay focused. I don't think I'll read this book again. It was an adventure novel but I think that aspect of it was secondary to learning about the characters. It was a great book and a great author. Subject: Review/comment: I'm currently writing a 6 page essay on this novel with very little to substantiate my ideas other than a rather thorough analysis of Kipling's jingoism. I have made the point that Kim could possibly be a representation of India's conflicting cultures (British Secret Service in which he excels and the life of spiritualism that he serves so obidiently) but some of the characters don't tie in with this theme. Name: Jim Short _____ [Date: 2/15/08] Title: Subject: A Great Fiction Book Review/comment: I was told to read The Second Virgin Birth to read by a friend who said it was good. Before reading it I thought that it was most likely another Da Vinci Code. Boy was I wrong, it is so much better. The characters and events are so believable that one wonders when this is actually going to take place. The chapters are short and that was a problem for me. I wanted to stop reading the book and begin it again tomorrow, but as I would finish a chapter, I would look ahead and think, well it's only 7 more pages and I would read that, try to put it down and do the same thing over and over. In other words, I wanted to find out what happened next more than I wanted to go to sleep. It was a fast and entertaining read that held my attention the whole time. The fact that Mr. Taylor made his major character, Mary, a sweet little girl, go insane at the age of six, completely caught me off guard and I had to adjust all of my preconceptions of how I thought this character would play out. The book was one, "I did not see that coming," after another. In most reviews I say that I don't want to tell the reader too much and spoil the ending, however in this book, I can't tell you too much because story has several very original new thoughts running throughout the book and I don't want to give any of them away. For once, I felt that I truly got my money's worth.
