Title: In Memory: James T. Fields Author: John Greenleaf Whittier [More Titles by Whittier] As a guest who may not stay Of the sweetness and the zest Warm of heart and clear of brain, Now that thou hast gone away, What is there to gloss or shun? Safe thou art on every side, Over manly strength and worth, Mirth that lit, but never burned; Every harsh and vexing thing And thy perfect trust in good, Small respect for cant and whine, But to thee was duty's claim Therefore, on thy unknown way, Keep for us, O friend, where'er Something of thy pleasant past Keep the human heart of thee; And when fall our feet as fell Proving in a world of bliss 1881.
