Title: Dust Of The Street Author: Bliss Carman [More Titles by Carman] This cosmic dust beneath our feet Borne by the wind and blown astray Is the same stuff as you and I-- Thousands of times since time began Freighted like us with every sense To walk the world and know the fine These wandering atoms in their day With eager step and flowerlike face, On what delightful errands bent, An angel still, though veiled and gloved, Friends, when the summons comes for me On this delightful play, I claim And you will not decline a task Scatter my ashes in the street I beg you of your charity, To needlessly perpetuate Others may wish to lay them down Where slim white birches wave and gleam Or in luxurious beds of fern, To the one place it loved the best [The end] GO TO TOP OF SCREEN |
