First this one tried, Those others saw his plight, and laughed and jeered, So, through the torture of an endless day, Then, as he wrestled for each hard-won breath, --Came One in white, athwart the fiery hail, He knelt beside him on the reeking ground, Gave him to drink, and in his failing ear The suffering one looked up into the face The tender brow with unhealed wounds was scarred, "Brother, for thee I suffered greater woes; "Yea, Lord, as Thou forgavest, I forgive; Thick-clustered in the battered trench, amazed, --The Christ of God, come down to succour one And none who saw that sight will e'er forget [The end] GO TO TOP OF SCREEN |
